EdTech virtual trade mission to India: April 2022
Applications are currently open for up to six export-ready Victorian education technology (EdTech) companies to join the Victorian Government, through Global Victoria on a virtual EdTech mission to India.
The mission will be a specialist two-day program designed to brief Victorian EdTech companies on the opportunities in the Indian market, provide advice on market entry strategy and introduce them to distributors and channel partners, in the sectors of:
- K12 schools
- higher education
- corporate training and professional development.

What types of businesses should apply?
Applicants should be:
- export-ready Victorian EdTech providers with a history of:
- exporting to emerging markets, or
- at least have some proven export experience or
- a clear business plan identifying India as a short-term priority market to engage.

This trade mission is specifically designed to connect participants with pre-qualified channel partners, distributors who are a critical link in the Indian market given the size, scale and diversity of the market.
Victoria is a recognised as a world-leader in research and education, and Melbourne is widely perceived across the India as Australia’s tech capital. Previous market scoping activities conducted by Global Victoria have signalled a strong commercial potential for Victorian EdTech providers in a number of key markets across the region.
The India EdTech Virtual Trade Mission Program will enable participant companies to:
- gain a high-level understanding of the market potential for their products and services
- engage with relevant stakeholders – including potential channel partners and distributors
- present their value proposition – both in virtual roundtables and through one-on-one meetings with the purpose of identifying and advancing commercial opportunities.

- 28 per cent of India’s population is under 14 years with over 250 million school-aged children.
- 500 million Indians are under 24 years of age, making India one of the biggest education markets in the world.
- There are 1.5 million schools, 45,000 colleges and over 900 universities.
- India is the second largest market for eLearning after the US.
- The total addressable market for online education in the higher education and lifelong learning segments are approximately 40-50 million users and is expected to grow to USD$4 to 6 billion by 2025.
- A number of global reports are starting to place India in the top 3 markets in the world for EdTech opportunity.
Opportunities for Victorian EdTech businesses
Curriculum development for K-12 segment
- Both complimentary and supplementary systems, and STEM education is often prioritised at a number of Indian institutions.
Content delivery
- Content delivery is experiencing huge demand in India for both K-12, as well as the higher education segment.
- In May 2020, the Indian government announced that the top 100 institutions in India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) can now offer fully online degrees without needing any approvals.
- Many of India's higher education institutions are not fully equipped to implement online learning.
Online tutoring targeting ages 3-18 years
- In India, nearly half of all students have private tutors.
- Examination preparation is also quite unique to India
English language and entrance exams abroad (GRE-GMAT prep)
As this is a requirement for securing admissions in universities overseas, online test preparatory systems and assessments are gaining significant popularity.
Re-skilling and executive development programs
Demand for online certificate courses and interest in language learning is on the rise, as are courses in management and technology, and online MBA's.

During the mission
- An EdTech round table will provide opportunity for an in-depth discussion with senior education leaders from India to receive insights about the market in India.
- A pitching session by Victorian EdTech companies to Indian distributors and channel partners.
- A minimum of five one-on-one business meetings with Indian distributors.
- Opportunity to meet and engage with other participating Indian companies.
- Support for media announcements or case studies companies would like to propose.
Post-mission
- An evaluation form will be distributed to all businesses.
- If requested, a follow-up with delegates will be held
Terms and Conditions
Applications will be subject to an approval process and participation will be at the discretion of the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Resources (DJPR).
