About the VTM
Thailand’s vision to attain developed country status and transition to a digital economy by 2036 provides opportunities for Victorian technology businesses in a multitude of sectors.
This virtual trade mission will enable Victorian exporters to build market insights, explore opportunities, expand their networks, promote their capabilities and identify potential partners in Thailand in order to pursue opportunities arising from Thailand’s rapid development whilst under travel restrictions.
Why Thailand?
Thailand is the second largest economy in Southeast Asia.
According to the World Bank Group “Doing Business” 2020 report, Thailand is rated fifth for ease of doing business out of the 25 countries in the region.
It has a growing middle class, good infrastructure, a strong industrial base, strong regional and global connectivity and globally significant industries.
Thailand’s infrastructure is currently undergoing transformation, and the Thai Government’s 20 Year National Strategy Thailand 4.0 to attain developed country status and transition to a digital economy is modernising its economy, driving reform and creating opportunities in technologies in:
- smart cities
- construction
- Industry 4.0
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- smart logistics
- medtech
- digital health
- fintech
- clean technologies
- agritech
- energy.
The business potential with Thailand is widely recognised by the Victorian Government, with a number of Global Victoria led trade missions to Thailand in 2016 and 2018 resulting in positive business outcomes for Victorian companies that participated.
Background
In September 2018 the Victorian Government released Globally Connected: Victoria’s Southeast Asia Trade and Investment Strategy. The Strategy highlighted the Victorian Government’s commitment to delivering trade missions to Southeast Asia. Virtual trade missions play an important role in helping to connect
Victorian companies with opportunities across Southeast Asia. The Strategy highlighted opportunities in the technology sector in Thailand as one of the most prospective for Victorian tech firms.
The Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement provides Victorian exporters and investors increasingly good market access. Thailand is looking towards international partnerships to help deliver
its economic reform strategies, many of which are technology based.
