Latin America METS Virtual Business Program: May-June 2021
The Victorian Government, through Global Victoria, invites export-ready Victorian Mining, Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) to participate in a Latin America METS Virtual Business Program during May and June 2021.
The past year has created significant barriers for Victorian METS in developing new business overseas and maintaining market share. Despite the challenges, mining activity has largely continued apace throughout the Latin America region, and demand for automation, optimisation and other labour and cost-saving technological solutions from acknowledged global METS leaders including Australia remains strong.
Our program will work with selected Victorian METS with an active interest in entering or expanding their presence in the Latin America region, with a particular emphasis on Chile and Peru. The core aim is to connect Victorian METS exporters with potential clients and partners across the region and create opportunities to present solutions to their identified needs.
Why Chile and Peru?
Victoria’s Latin America Trade and Investment Strategy identifies METS as a priority opportunity.
Global Victoria supports an annual program of inbound and outbound METS-related trade activity with Latin America and seeks to build upon connections and relationships built over many years and participating in major events such as Expomin, Perumin, Exponor, and IMARC.
Chile is one of the world’s leading investment markets for mining. It is the largest producer of copper in the world and is a major producer of iodine, rhenium, lithium, gold and molybdenum.
Chile’s investment portfolio for the next 10 years stands at USD$65 billion, with significant projects in production and being developed by a wide cross section of global mining majors, including Victorian companies such as BHP and Rio Tinto. Chile offers considerable opportunities for Victorian METS through accessing the supply chains of these major projects.
Peru has emerged as one of Latin America’s best performing mining markets. It is the second largest producer of copper in the world and is one of the world’s four top producers for silver, lead, zinc, tin and molybdenum.
It also boasts significant gold, phosphates and uranium deposits. Over the past 10 years high rates of production have attracted USD $60 billion of inbound investment into Peru’s mining sector. With a pipeline of 49 major mine projects estimated at over US$59 billion to be developed over the next few years, Peru will grow as an attractive export destination for Victorian METS.
What types of businesses should attend?
Export-ready Victorian METS companies with experience or a strong interest in the market and motivation to further developing their sales pipelines are welcome to apply.
There is no cost for eligible Victorian METS that submit a successful application. Numbers are strictly limited.
The program will be delivered in partnership between Global Victoria’s Santiago office and two specialised consultancy firms with expertise in the mining and METS industries of Chile and Peru, and a demonstrated capacity to connect Victorian industry with leading potential clients in the Latin America region.
