Christian Kimber

Christian Kimber is redefining Australian menswear through a focus on the art of dressing. Creating staple garments epitomising the essence of modern masculinity, the British-Australian designer is committed to a ‘slow-lifestyle’ philosophy. This manifests in every aspect of Kimber’s self-named label, from the textural considerations of a cotton blazer, to the Italian craftsmanship of a pair of chocolate-leather loafers. Kimber has dedicated his entire working life to understanding the fashion industry. Studying design at night school while working in fashion during the day, he learned the craft of pattern making, clothing and footwear design and technical drawing. He pursued nine internships across a range of practice areas, while gaining significant experience in sales and retail management. Reflecting on the process of creating a garment or shoe, Kimber expresses his dedication to producing elegantly functional products that are also sustainably sound. It is this ethos that has earned the label the respect and support of loyal clients all over the world.

Design is clearly more than a passion for Kimber. It's a way of life through which he connects with a global community of artisans and creatives. Since starting his small business in 2015, Kimber and his team have watched their label flourish in the international fashion sphere, assisted by social media and global press. Now stocked in six different locations across Hong Kong and Mainland China, Kimber’s online store also ships daily orders to destinations including Tokyo, New York, London and Stockholm. Kimber and his staff aspire to continue growing their international presence over the coming years. Whether visiting the brand’s sleek flagship store in Fitzroy, Melbourne, or unboxing a pair of crisp signature sneakers that have arrived on your doorstep, the Christian Kimber experience is one of authenticity and immaculate attention to detail.

Chris Ran Lin

A dialogue between traditional technique and conceptual innovation is a signature of Chris Ran Lin’s designs. With a commitment to exploring the creative potential of wool beyond classical tailoring, the Chinese-Australian designer has nurtured his unique design practice into a self-titled commercial luxury menswear label. Lin celebrates colour and texture across all his collections; reinvigorating the notion of menswear through a focus on delicate fabrications and architectural silhouettes. It is this refreshing boldness in Lin’s creative practice that has won the designer a significant following throughout both the Australian
and Asian markets.

Born in China, Lin moved to Australia at the age of 18. He graduated from RMIT University’s highly regarded Fashion Design program achieving Masters qualifications, with his graduate collections showcased at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and iD Dunedin Fashion week in New Zealand. In 2017, Lin presented his ‘Noise’ collection at the world’s leading menswear trade show at Pitti Uomo, Italy, where his work caught the attention of global press and luxury buyers. In the same year Lin’s label was also nominated in the prestigious 2017 International Woolmark Prize, as well as being invited to show at Jakarta Fashion Week.

Reflecting on his recent success, Lin admits there is substitute for sheer hard work and dedication to his craft.

Chris Ran Lin is undoubtedly a brand with broad horizons. Lin’s collections have already appeared extensively across Asia and Europe, with the majority of his customers being from China. His first international collaborative collection with luxury retailer Lane Crawford in 2017 was sold in stores across mainland China and Hong Kong. The label is also in the process of consolidating a cross-over collection with another Chinese company, which will see Lin’s garments being stocked in another 300 stores across China. Evidently, Chris Ran Lin is a label quickly crafting its own niche within the global menswear sphere

MNDATORY (Brian Huynh)

A transformative design approach with a focus on fabrication forms the DNA of Melbourne-based menswear label MNDATORY. The label’s founder Brian Huynh is committed to creating both ready-to-wear and made-to-measure offerings for his clients, recognising the need for innovation in menswear across both the Australian and global markets. Whether it be a black merino tank top, or a bold pinstripe overcoat, MNDATORY represents an alternative design perspective for connoisseurs of conceptual innovation in the men’s fashion sphere.

Inspired by the design philosophies of architect Louis Kahn, Huynh launched his label in 2016 as a means of honouring the innate qualities of all materials. He completed a Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion at Melbourne’s Whitehouse Institute of Design, while concurrently interning and working in menswear tailoring. Huynh reflects on this time as one of significant growth; obtaining extensive knowledge in garment fit and the relationship different fabrications have with the body. In 2018 MNDATORY was named as a finalist in the VAMFF National Designer Award, subsequently showing collections at Melbourne Fashion Week and assuming an active role as a member of the Australian Fashion Council. Extensive industry recognition has evidently been vital to MNDATORY’s success.

The MNDATORY universe continues to expand. In 2018 the label participated in a Victorian Government trade mission, showcasing as part of the Hong Kong Business of Design Week in Wan Chai. This was the largest ever presentation of Victorian fashion in an international context. With a studio based in Melbourne’s St. Collins Lane, MNDATORY’s vision is to establish a fully immersive flagship store in Melbourne, which could be emulated throughout other key fashion destinations such as Shanghai, Tokyo, London and New York.
