Continuing to help Victorian METS companies expand in Latin America

A core focus of our Santiago Victorian Government Trade and Investment office is helping Victorian mining engineering, technology, and services (METS) companies connect to business opportunities in Latin America.

Complementing our virtual business programs over the past two years, we were excited to have our first physical trade mission return to Latin America to PERUMIN in the beautiful Peruvian city of Arequipa in September 2022 with 12 Victorian companies in attendance.

Victorian METS that participated in the mission gained exposure to the dynamic mining sector in Peru; engaged and met with decision-makers from leading mining operations; and showcased their solutions for increasing productivity, safety and sustainability in a rapid-changing industry.

At PERUMIN we had the opportunity to recognise two leading Victorian METS that are making a strong contribution to the Australia-Peru METS ecosystem.

  • We acknowledged Orica's leading role in embracing innovation and pioneering technological transformation in the mining space.
  • We also recognised Mining Plus’ valuable contribution to supporting the development of the local METS ecosystem, by building a team of Peruvian engineers that deliver high-quality services in Peru and beyond.

Victorian METS to Mexico

Building on its track record in South America, the Santiago VGTI team has been making inroads in the Mexican mining industry to facilitate opportunities for Victorian businesses. Earlier in the year, under the Global Victoria Trade Alliance program, the Australia Latin America Business Council (ALABC) released Mining in Mexico - Guide for the Victorian METS exporters a document that provides key information and insights for accessing opportunities in the mining technology and services market in Mexico.

In October, in partnership with the Australia, New Zealand & Mexico Business Council (ANZMEX), Global Victoria supported ANZMEX’s Fourth High-Level Mining Dialogue held at the 14th International Mining Congress of Sonora 2022, which covered the growing environmental, sustainability and governance (ESG) imperatives in the mining industry.  This followed a market visit by the Victorian Commissioner to the Americas Nigel Warren and the Trade and Investment Director for LATAM Pablo Schatz to Mexico City in September.
