Select Harvests Limited is a vertically integrated grower, processor and seller of almonds and value-add almond products. By controlling every step from growing to processing, they've built a reputation for reliability and quality that commands premium prices in global markets.
As one of Australia’s largest almond growers and processors, Select Harvests has long viewed exporting as a cornerstone of its growth and long-term sustainability. With Australia producing nearly 10% of the world’s almonds—more than domestic demand requires—the company has strategically leveraged international markets to expand its global footprint and reinforce its position as a premium supplier.
Premium reputation built on trust
The company sees every box of exported almonds as an opportunity to deliver a world-class customer experience.
Select Harvests is widely recognised as a trusted brand and consistently commands a price premium in the market due to its high standards for quality and service. Recently, the company shifted to working directly with food service and retail customers, focusing on consistent quality, reliable supply, and long-term partnerships to support customers through all market conditions.
Driving growth through global markets
Despite facing global tariff uncertainties that influence customer decision-making, Select Harvests continues to excel, delivering premium Australian almonds to markets worldwide with reliability and resilience.
Access to global markets has spurred major investment in the company's processing facilities, enabling them to meet rising international demand with confidence and quality. This growth has not only strengthened Select Harvests, but bolstered Victoria’s economy through increased export revenue, infrastructure investment, and job creation.
Opening doors with Global Victoria
A key driver of this success is the company’s partnership with Global Victoria. With no staff based overseas, Select Harvests relies heavily on the insights and market intelligence provided by Global Victoria’s commissioners and their teams. Their deep understanding of local dynamics makes them an indispensable partner in the company’s international expansion.
Global Victoria’s knowledge of the food service and retail markets in India is extensive. Select Harvests have been actively engaging with Gopi Shankar, Global Victoria's Director of Trade and Industry from the Bengaluru office, who has been facilitating direct connections with buyers in India.
Turning waste into power
Select Harvests is proud to be at the forefront of the supply of sustainable high-quality Australian almonds.
To reduce the business environmental footprint, a co-gen plant was installed at its processing plant, which takes waste from the production process (being hull and shell) and burns the waste to produce electricity for the plant. Hull and shell are also ground and used in fertiliser on the farms. Select Harvests' farms are continuing to review fertiliser and water requirements to reduce where possible, whilst maintaining a reliable and sustainable crop.
Advice for exporters
- Do careful research on the demand and market for your products in the particular region – Global Victoria can assist in this initial research. Do not rush a launch or be unprepared for demand. Also speak to like-minded Victorian companies that may already have a presence in the market. Assuming that they are not a direct competitor, successful exporters will often share ‘war stories’ and be eager to provide advice to new entrants
- If engaging a partner on the ground in the market, do extensive due diligence – often a launch or ongoing business success is linked very much to the professionalism and engagement of local representatives
- Be prepared to be on the ground in the local market and making the connections yourself. There is a temptation to engage remotely to save time and cost – however at certain critical stages to build trust and overcome cultural and distance barriers, face to face meetings in the market are necessary.
