Why you should apply

Participation in this trade mission presents an opportunity for companies seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the South Korean life sciences ecosystem, as well as exploring existing opportunities for research collaborations, business partnerships, clinical trial attraction and commercialisation.

For the past five years, the Victorian Government has led trade missions to South Korea through Austrade and KHIDI. These trade missions have led to increased interest and awareness of the Victorian life sciences ecosystem and have seen collaborations and partnerships occurring in clinical trials, medical research and biotechnology.

South Korea has been an important market for Victoria's life sciences sector and is increasingly important for attracting phase one clinical trials into the State and increasing partnering and collaborations in medical research.

BIO KOREA is one of the most comprehensive biotechnology events in Asia and has grown in size and influence since it first commenced in 2006.

Victoria has several key strengths that align with South Korea’s life sciences sector including:

  • genetics and genomics
  • neuroscience
  • regenerative and personalised medicine
  • innovative therapeutics and diagnostics
  • clinical trials.

There is an opportunity for Victoria to strengthen relationships in South Korea across these sectors.

Why South Korea?

South Korea is the 10th largest pharmaceutical market in the world and is strongly focused on domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing.

South Korea’s bio-health industry has been growing rapidly in recent years with the Korean government focused on creating a world-leading bio-health sector, which includes implementing a program that oversees the entire cycle of the bio-health sector, from R&D to licensing, manufacturing, and marketing.

South Korea is becoming increasingly active in the global market due to its drug development capabilities and focus on exploring areas of unmet medical needs.

Key Pharmaceutical companies based in South Korea include Celltrion, Yuhan, SD Biosensor, GC Pharma, Korea Kolmar, Samsung Biologics, SK Bioscience and Daewoong Pharmaceuticals.
