Growing collaboration and business connections with the US States of Washington and Minnesota

Governor Jay Inslee from the State of Washington and Governor Tim Walz from the State of Minnesota both visited Victoria in November 2023 accompanied by business delegations as part of broader trade and study missions to Australia.  Global Victoria was delighted to support these visits and looks forward to growing business connections and collaboration with both States across multiple shared sectors of interest – including cleantech and sustainability, medical technology, agriculture, technology, aviation and defence.

State of Washington

Washington delegation

Washington is a leading state in the US for carbon reduction and is a major player in developing new, renewable, and sustainable energy sources while protecting the environment. Since 2013, the state’s Clean Energy Fund has allocated more than $150 million in grants to organisations and researchers exploring new energy concepts and technologies.  Washington is also well known for its technology sector: it is the birthplace of businesses such as Microsoft, Amazon, F5 Networks, Zillow and Expedia and home to engineering offices for companies including Facebook, Google, Twitter, Apple, Salesforce, BestBuy, Alibaba and eBay.

For the aerospace sector, Washington’s supply chain is the largest in the US, with more than 1,500 aerospace-related suppliers and vendors. The state has produced more than 33,000 commercial and military aircraft, including every Boeing model that begins and ends with a ‘7’  (including being the sole producer of the Boeing 737, 767 and 777).

More information is available from the Washington State Department of Commerce.

State of Minnesota

Minnesota delegation The State of Minnesota, centrally located in the U.S., is a diverse economy, with a high concentration of Fortune 500 companies and a fast-growing startup ecosystem. They are a leader in innovative medical technology, have a growing clean energy and hydrogen ecosystem, and are one of the top producers of food in the United States. Minnesota has a reputation as a medical technology pioneer and ranks among the top states for medical device patents per 1 million people, and is recognised as the most efficient region for medical device production in the United States.

The Minnesota MedTech Hub 3.0 consortium has recently been recognised by the Biden Administration as one of 31 inaugural "Tech Hubs" across the United States. As part of their growing clean energy and hydrogen ecosystem, the Heartland Hydrogen Hub was recently designated U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs across the US to be developed.
